Greenville June 5/864
My dear Sister
It has been some time since your letter came to hand. I should have written before this if have been convenient.
I am now on a visit to Uncle C.C. Montgomery’s have had a very pleasant time. There has been a Gentleman & wife & son boarding here, refugees from Kentucky. Also a lady & two Gentlemen from Columbia. Spent last week here, we had a very nice time. Joe & I have both fallen in love with one man. I cant tell how we will make it. Suppose I will relinquish my claims, as I think I can do better. I have been quite sick for three days since I have been here. Yesterday I was very sick never eat anything for thirty-six hours. but feel about well today except weakness. I expect to return home in a day or two now. I forgot to tell you our beaux is going to send us some music from Columbia. he is in the Treasury department, detailed during the war. We have been very busy today making out post Office returns.
I suppose you noticed that Lieut Goodlett was very seriously wounded, probably he is dead as we hear nothing from him.
Cousin Scott Montgomery is wounded and at his brother Johns, has not been to see us yet, he sent me word he was coming soon.
We went to church at Enoree last Sunday heard the Rev Thomas Dile preach one of his grand sermons I can’t see that he improves any. Saw a large congregation among the number was several soldiers home on furlough There is a great many deserters in the mountains they are getting very bold go to peoples houses and rob them and they cannot say a word a good many are leaving home on account of them. Dr Stiles[?] has moved back to Esq [Barrites?].
I can inform you that Lieut David Nickels spend the day with me just before I left home. he can laugh as much as ever. it was reported in Camps we were to be married but I am happy to say it is faulse.
Tell Mary I am under many obligations to her for her kind note, and would have been delighted to have gone to the Commencement, but I could not conveniently do so. but I thought of her, and wished the night be enjoying herself to her hearts content. If Alice is over in your neighborhood give her my love. & Maggie sends love to her & Mary. She is going to school to Mr. Therlkile. LaFayette & John are at Georgetown they are enjoying fine health.
Lieut B.P. Morgan has been quite sick but was some better when I left home. Pinkney Vaughn is home wounded in arm, not seriously. it is time for the stage so I will have to close. Give my love to all and recieve a portion yourself I am your sister
