Dr. Henry Verias Westmoreland was a "founding father" of Greer and Greer's first medical doctor. He began practicing in Greer around 1870. One of Greer's first landowners, Dr. Westmoreland owned several acres of land in the area that is now Poinsett Street (which was originally named Emma Avenue, after his wife). His home was at 300 West Poinsett, and is now the home of Wood Mortuary.
Dr. Westmoreland was injured on his right side below the shoulder blade during the Civil War at Uppersville, Virginia on June 21, 1863. The bullet could not be located and gave him intense pain. On May 8, 1872, the bullet was successfully removed with chloroform being used during surgery.
Henry Westmoreland married Emma Ann Cunningham. Their daughter, Leila Westmoreland, married Theron Earle Cunningham.
Dr. Westmoreland is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Greer.
