Greer’s civil defense was started in 1942 during the midst of WWII. The Civilian Defense Guard was formed in order to make sure the City of Greer was prepared for any potential German bombings and for the after math of an attack. The directors of Greer's Civil Defense from the 1940s through the late 1960s included B.M Lanford, J.R. Parker, Tazwell (Tab) Campbell, and Harold Bowers.
After WWII the Civil Defense Unit took up the role of first responders in the city of Greer. Aiding citizens by serving at car accidents, boating accidents, fires, and by directing traffic for football games at Greer High School.
Eventually the Civil Defense Unit provided a free ambulance service to the city of Greer.
The Civil Defense Unit contributed greatly to the city of Greer and the men who served with the unit invested in the well-being of the city.
