In one of Greer's great scandals, Greer businessman George Washington Hughes was murdered by his young and beautiful wife, Mattie. George was a successful and well-liked jeweler and merchant in Greer. He was shot in the chest by his wife, Mattie, during an argument in their home, and died 24 hours later. He is buried in the Edgewood Cemetery in Greer. The full story is quite remarkable; read it in the biography of Martha "Mattie" Ann Waldrop Hughes, linked below.
Maps of Greer, made by the Sanborn Map Company. After the 1930 maps were released, Sanborn changed to a system of mailing out "glue on" patches to update maps, rather than creating entirely new maps. These images show all the cumulative updates to make the map up-to-date as of March 1951.
