William Clark Bailey
1833-1882
The son of Hugh Bailey, William Clark began life as a farmer on the Bailey lands at Bailey's crossroads (just beyond the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
He later moved to the new town of Greer, in 1880, and became the first depot railroad agent for the new flag station.
W.C. Bailey became very active in community affairs, and was elected the town of Greers first mayor, or "Intendent" as it was called in those days.
He founded the first Mason's XXXX in this XXXX, the Bailey Masonic Lodge which still bears his name. William Clark was the first worshipful Master of the Lodge, and he furthermore established Masonic Lodges in Reidville, S.C. and Rock Hill, S.C.
William Clark Bailey was married to Victoria Cunningham, and were parents of four children.
He is buried in the Bailey Cunningham Cemetery on the corner of Brushy Creek Road and Buncomb Road.
