My own darling Audrey,
I wrote to you Sunday and have been waiting for an answer before writing again, but as none has yet reached me, I have decided to ask what can be the matter; whether or not you are sick. Perhaps you have written and your letter has been delayed. Please answer this as soon as it has been received and let me know how you are doing. It has been a week to-day since I saw you last. To me this seems a long time. I am very anxious to hear from you.
What did your Mother think of our engagement? I would like so much to know her opinion. If, however, you have not mentioned it to her, I will save you the trouble, when I return to Greenvill, if you desire. Darling isn't it nice to be engaged, to love and be loved?
This is a beautiful country. The people are very sociable. Nearly every week there is an entertainment. Was invited to one Wednesday evening, but did not go. I have had the pleasure of meeting several very pretty young ladies. One of them said she thought I must be engaged, for I didn't seem to hear anything she was saying. My thoughts seemed to be far away. I was thinking of you, and wishing it was you talking instead of her.
Now that I am away from you and you have had time to think over what has occurred in the last few months between us How much more do you love me now than when I was in Greenville? Is it still impossible for you to love me "less?" I would give anything if I were better able to tell you of this love which is consuming me. I am not happy away from you. My dear, with you I can accomplish anything, deprived of you I feel that life will be a failure. But why do I repeat what I have often told you. Audrey, it is because you say you [end of page]
