- Verner King opened his first grocery store in 1955 with $700 saved from his service in the US Navy. This South Main Street store was called Southside Food Center. In 1980, when the new railroad overpass took his property, he moved to Pennsylvania Avenue, renaming the store Food King. The store closed in 1985.
