- Ponder was born in the Washington community and came to Greer in 1903 to open a grocery store. His home-churned ice cream was so popular that he organized Ponder's Ice Cream Company in 1905 and operated it until the early 1960's. Ponder delivered ice cream in the immediate upstate area. In the early days he also did some bottling of soft drinks.
