- Dr. Viola Kirkwood, indeed a legend, came from Mississippi in the early 20th century. Her husband was a jeweler and she was an optometrist, a rare achievement for her time. Besides her practice, she was a photographer and artist. Dr. Kirkwood married Ramey Kirkwood in 1891 and moved to Greer, SC in 1919. Dr. Kirkwood retired in 1944.
