- Elsie Pauline Belcher moved from the Dark Corner with her family in 1913 to work in a cotton mill. She was stricken with a form of paralysis that required her to walk with crutches the remaining 70 years of her life. Nevertheless, she was employed as a drawing-in hand in the weave room, work which she continued until retirement
