Biographical Text

Gilreath served in the 16th South Carolina Regiment of the Army of the Confederate States of America. After Reconstruction he was elected sheriff, a post he held until the turn of the century. Well known for his courage and integrity, Gilreath rarely carried a gun, preferring instead to rely upon the public's respect for the law to carry out his duties.
