Hi Don
How are you. Fine, I hope. Today is the first day it hasn’t rained here in almost two weeks. It sure is good to see the sun.
It is now about 9:15 p.m. I am listening to WCKY. It is coming in almost perfectly. You asked what kind of radio I am using. It is a Motorola 5 tube (plus rectifier) portable. It is really a good radio. It sounds better than most table model radios. It operates on batteries on 110V AC or DC, only draw 15 watts line current. It is about 9” x 11” x 2 ½” printed circuit, the chassis isn’t as big as the “B” battery.
I must have given you the wrong impression about not being able to go off-post last weekend. It was not anything that I did. The whole company had to stay here. Someone has to work on weekends, so they take turns. This weekend, we will be loose while some other company pulls K.P. for us.
Speaking of “hams”, my Platoon Sargeant has a mobile unit in his car, but I doubt if it will reach that far. I don’t know of anyone else yet but I’m still looking.
I think I will be able to borrow a tape recorder next week, a guy in my platoon has a new Webcom He said he would let me use it. I will try to get a tape down there by next Saturday.
Well, next Saturday is Armed Forces day. We have a big parade coming up then. I am supposed to be a flag bearer. Anyway I have to drill for it every day next week after everyone else is off-duty. This is a small post compared to Fort Jackson. There are less than 4000 students and the post is only about 2 miles across.
I made some good shots of buildings around here and of the beach + ocean at Ashbury Park. I will try to make some prints over the weekend and send them to you.
Don, you would like to listen to the radio around here. There are so many stations that you can get any kind of music that you want at any time some of the stations play popular music most of the time. There is a couple that play orchestra music both pop + classical, all the time. Then, of course all the network programs. You can get WCBS WABC + WRCA (NBC) as if the transmitters were right behind the barracks.
I didn’t get to go away from the train station of D>C. I wasn’t sure when the train was leaving, so I stayed in the station to be sure I didn’t miss it. I am going to try to go back down there some weekend.
Well, It is getting pretty late, so I’ll close for now. Write when you can
Su amigo,
Fred
