The Little City With The Big Future
PAST . . . Less than two centuries ago, the area that now is Greer was not in the State of South Carolina, but was a part of a section set apart from the province, and designated as the "Domain of the Cherokees." The present site of Greer was a paradise for the Cherokee Indian who hunted through the hills and fished in the many streams. During this period, settlers who lived close to the old Indian Boundary Line encountered many pioneer hardships.
After the Revolutionary War, the area which is now Greer be- came a part of the State of South Carolina and has evolved through the years into the second largest city in Greenville County. In 1866 Mr. Manning Greer purchased an original tract of land consisting of 200 acres. Mr. Greer's name became the name of the City and is, indeed, unique since nowhere in the nation is there another city called Greer.
This tract of land was sold in 1868 to another southern gentle- man, Mr. W. T. Shumate, for the sum of $900. Mr. Shumate anticipated a town for this section because of the proposed route of the Southern Railway. The railway did reach Mr. Shumate's tract in 1872 and the following year the town was granted a charter. Mr. Shumate gave large tracts of land to the city for churches, schools and other civic buildings.
Greer retains much of the character of this early beginning. It is a city with a proud heritage of initiative, strength and courage and continues to grow physically and spiritually.
PRESENT . . . Greer has progressed from the crawling stage of a little town to the walking stage of a small city and now is poised at the threshold of becoming the center of a two county metropolitan complex.
Greer is able to retain the warmth and personality of its small beginning, but at the same time is cognizant of the nearby cultural and educational advantages. This has been brought about by the cordial intermingling of both its older and newer business and industry leaders.
FUTURE . . . Its potential has been seen not only by those who are here and by its neighbors, but also by its friends all over the country. As a result, the jet age airport, many new industries, and numerous trucking terminals have chosen to locate in or near Greer. With its strong foundation, Greer is confidently ready to take its rightful place as the center of the South Carolina Piedmont.

BRIGHTEN UP
From time to time, most of us experience the flowing sensation that comes when we discover something unexpected.
Ever wrestle long and hard with a problem and then, when it seems there is nothing in sight in the way of a solution, get the type of inspiration which makes you wonder why things appeared difficult in the first place? It happens to all of us.
All this leads up to the fact that we would like to throw a little light on an important subject. While it won’t be “new” to some folks who will be surprised if they will always take the time to shop local stores first, whatever their needs.
It’s true. Some of our local citizens do trade “out of town,” all the time. To these we say, try local stores FIRST. Telephone or visit the local merchant, explain your needs, and let him tell you what he has to offer.
We think you will be deLIGHTfully surprised.
Trade at Home for Your own sake! and community progress
