The Song of Chick's Spring
I come from Mother earth's fond breast, by ways unknown to any,
I bring a boon to those who drink, more precious far than money;
I sing a song to all who come, of healing measure ever,
And back to me the echo rings, "flow on, flow on forever."
I heal the sick, I round the form of widow, maid, and spinster;
I flush the cheek, I smooth the brow of student, sage and min'ster;
I gurgle into rims of tin, and oft-times those of silver,
For men may come and women go, "but I go on forever."
I murmur over bony hands, I smile at lovers pledges,
I soil the skirt of many a gown that ripples round my edges;
I chatter, chatter as I flow with noisy haste and gusto,
When round my glassy brinks I have a merry crowd to list to.
I care not, know not aught of love, my path is plainly duty;
My mission comes from Him above-- a part of nature's beauty.
Bonjour! Bonjour; but no farewell, nay nay, not yet forever,
Come drink again, when flowers bloom, we'll quaff "your health" together.
