Peach Fete Postponed By Greer Chamber Heads
GREER -- W. H. Botts, president, announced today that the Greer Chamber of Commerce board of directors voted in their regular April meeting to emphasize major portions of the 1968 program of work, resulting in a postponement of this year's South Carolina Peach Festival.
He said several important commitments have to take precedence over other plans and cited the downtown revitalization program, mall research project, long-range planning regarding the program of annexation, sanitary sewer system, area-wide study and utility development, along with the economic study of Greer conducted last year as important items demanding attention.
Botts said economic and social factors affecting Greer dictate that sound planning be initiated and carried on so orderly growth of Greer can be insured.
A special study committee set up this year and composed of members of the City Council, Commission of Public Works and the Chamber executive board and general membership, has been concerned with important items such as annexation and the location of the highway department on a permanent basis. Botts indicated that he expected this committee's functions to grow in importance in the remaining months of the year.
Interest in all of these items, along with the Hammer Report which indicates that Greer will suffer economically without careful planning, has caused the board of directors to re-evaluate the time and energies to be spent, he said.
Botts noted the chamber board has not had a re-study of the Peach Festival in several years and said he feels a special committee to study the festival during the year with the intention of re-vamping it into a community project would be highly desirable. The hospital executive related that this action of the board is a postponement of the Peach Festival and in no way indicates a conclusion of the 11-year event.
'68 Peach Festival Postponed: Program of Work Gets Light
Chamber of Commerce President W. H. Botts announced today that the Board of Directors of the trade association has voted in their regular April meeting to emphasize major portions of the 1968 Program of Work, resulting in a postponement of this year's South Carolina Peach Festival.
President Botts said that several important commitments have to take precedence over other plans and he cited the downtown revitalization program and the mall research project along with long range planning regarding the program of annexation, area-wide study and utility development, along with the economic study of Greer conducted this past year, as some of the important items demanding attention.
President Botts went on to say that the economic and social factors affecting Greer dictate that sound planning be initiated and carried on this year so that the orderly growth of Greer can be insured. The special study committee, set up this year, and composed of members of the City Council, Commission of Public Works, Chamber executive board and the general membership have concerned themselves with important items such as annexation and the location of the highway department on a permanent basis. Botts indicated that he expected this committee's function to grow in importance in the remaining months of the year.
Re-Evaluation Sought
Interest in other areas along with interest in the downtown mall research project and the Hammer report which indicate that Greer will suffer economically without careful planning has caused the board of directors to re-evaluate the time and energies to be spent.
Concluding his statement, Mr. Botts said that the Chamber's board has not had a re-study of the Peach Festival in several years and that he feels a special committee to study the festival during the year with the intention of re-vamping it into a community project would be highly desirable. The hospital executive related that this action on the board is a postponement of the Peach Festival and in no way indicates a conclusion of the 11-year promotional event.
