- William A. Hill
- Description
- William Hill was one of the original land speculators in the development of what would become Greer.
- Biographical Text
- William A. Hill was one of the first three investors (along with John W. Cunningham and Dr. Henry V. Westmoreland) to purchase lots from William Shumate, who had bought Manning Greer's land. By 1874, he had purchased nine lots, comprising about 25% of the area. Prior to the establishment of Greer's, Hill applied to the legislature to incorporate his development into a town. From the city's founding in 1876 until shortly after 1950, East Poinsett Street was called Hill Street after him.
