GREER HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1928 HOLDS 50-YEAR REUNION
Members of the 1928 graduating class of Greer High School gathered for a 50th anniversary reunion on Saturday, Sept.9 at the Thunderbird Motor Inn with 35 classmates present. Two teachers, Miss Nellie Burnett and S.H. Hendrix also enjoyed this occasion.
Registration, with name tags showing pictures of members as they were in 1928, began at 5:30 p.m. followed by a social hour hosted by Margaret Bennett Cullum with renewal of friendships. After a group picture was taken, Dr. L. H. Mayfield, of Cincinnati, Ohio, gave the invocation.
A buffet dinner was served at 7 p.m. followed by welcoming remarks by the class president, Margaret Bennett Cullum, who presided over the short program and recognized Miss Burnett and Mr. Hendrix.
All classmates received a booklet, done beautifully in Greer High School colors of gold and black, containing the Senior Class poem, class reunion program, a picture of the 1928 seniors, list of class officers, class song. Alma Mater and a “Remember When” page including a picture of their Washington trip take at Mt. Vernon. A complete list of living members with their present addresses was a part of the booklet along with space for autographs. Printed copies of selections from the May, 1928, school paper, “Pep”, were received by the guests. This was a special senior edition in lieu of annual with the funds going toward their trip to Washington, this being the first class to do so.
A meaningful memorial to the 21 deceased class members was given by Dr. Mayfield.
With music of the 1920’s playing in the background, the president opened the program to any member who would like to reminisce or remark. Several responded and fond memories were brought back. All joined in singing the Alma Mater.
The benediction was offered by Wilton J. Gibson, husband of Virginia Gilreath Gibson.
Along with local area classmates, others attending were from Dallas, Texas; Cincinnati, Ohio; Rick Hill, Statesville, NC.; Beaufort, Hendersonville, N.C.; Bridgeport, Conn.; Morganton, N.C.; Harbor City, Cal.; Bakersfield, Cal.; Lancaster; Spindale, N.C.; Charlotte, N.C.; Columbia; Gadsden, Ala.; and Oxford, N.C.
