MISS DEMPSEY DIES IN GREER

GREER, Oct. 30– Miss Alice Dempsey, 63, died Wednesday morning at 2:50 o’clock at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. E. A. Mayfield. She suffered a stroke of paralysis early Sunday morning from which she failed to rally despite the work of skilled physicians and all that loving hands could do for her.
The sad news of her death comes as a distinct shock to countless friends and the whole of Greer mourns her passing– a silent sadness that cannot find expression in words. Miss Dempsey was a most gifted woman, beautiful, cultural and possessing a disposition marvelously magnetic and her life was devoted to good works and loving service to every one. She was lovingly called “Aunt Alice” by all those who came within her environments.
Miss Dempsey was a charter member of the Memorial Methodist church of Greer and was one of its most loyal and faithful members. It is hard for friends to realize that her voice, which had brought cheer and happiness to them is hushed forever.
For a number of years, Miss Dempsey was the assistant in the Greer postoffice during the terms of her brother, E.A. Mayfield was postmaster. Also, later when W. E. James was in charge of the office. She had made her home with her sister-in-law, Mrs. E. A. Mayfield during the past twenty-nine years and her quiet, unobtrusive Christian life endeared her to every one in Greer and surrounding communities.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. J. R. Pollard of near Greer; a sister-in-law, Mrs. E. A. Mayfield and a number of nieces and nephews.
