Directory of Information

Nestled into the rolling Piedmont of the eastern Blue Ridge Mountains in northwestern South Carolina, Greer’s altitude is 1037 feet. This location assures Greer a moderate climate with very few days of summer or winter extremes. Annual rainfall usually exceeds 45 inches, ideal for agriculture. Lake Robinson and Lake Cummingham, manmade reservoirs, provide more than 6 mgd of clean soft water.

Incorporated in Greenville County in 1876, Greer has spread east into Spartanburg County. Divided into six wards, Greer city elects one representative from each ward to a four year city council term. The mayor is elected at large while the city administrator is hired by the council.

Greater Greer covers an area roughly six miles beyond the city. Fifty subdivisions and five accredited high schools serve a population of over 15,000 persons. More than 5,000 people are employed in the forty-eight diversified industries, which include food processing, furniture, plastic film, motors, textiles, and textile machinery.

Transportation is one of Greer’s assets, with rail, truck and air services available to all major southern cities. Midway between Atlanta and Charlotte, Greer is also convenient to Charleston's port-of-entry and home of its newest warehouseing* facility.
