Greer Midgets Trim Apalache Eleven Monday
Pushing over a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, Greer City Midgets won their second football game of the season here Monday night, taking a 6 to 0 verdict over Apalache in a game played during a drizzling rain.
Starting a drive on their own 35 early in the fourth quarter after recovering an Apalache fumble, the Greer city youngsters drove down to the enemy five from where they drove over in four tries for the only touchdown of the game, Carl Gibson hitting the line from two yards out for the six points. Murray Hall attempted to make the extra point through the line and his effort fell short by inches. Wade Shearer, Gibson and Hall alternated in carrying the ball on Greer’s touchdown drive.
Just before the half, Apalache drove down to Greer’s 5-yard line where the City Midgets dug in and took the ball on downs to stop the biggest scoring threat of the evening for the Apalache eleven.
Lister Plays Well
For Apalache, the play of Larry Lister in the backfield was outstanding. Larry broke loose around Greer’s ends for several sweeping gains during the game. Wilson, at end, and J. Brown at center, also played good ball for the losers.
In the Greer backfield, the play of Wade shearer, Carl Gibson and Murray Hall stood out, with Gibson being the chief ground gainer of the night. In the line, Billy Smith at center; Eric Anderson and Steve Dillard at ends; Billy Groce and Perry Boggs at guards; Douglas Brown and Edward Lazar at tackles, all played a good brand of ball.
