- Description
-
We have not identified an accompanying envelope for this letter. It is significant because it begins "My dearest Audrey," a striking change from the prior formal salutations like the immediate prior letter, which opened with "Miss Audrey." It adds to the sudden intimacy in the letter as he tells her "I miss my darling."
However, it ends with a surprise. Though written in Carlos Easley's very distinctive hand, the signature reads "J. Brown." Adding to the mystery, the original signature has been covered over with pencil (as reflected in several other of Audrey's letters), then erased or scraped, and J. Brown written in a strange hand on top. - Date
